🔁 “Even though part of me is persistently questioning whether these moments are worth pursuing and prioritizing, another part is telling me that there is creative energy swirling in me and in the world, and finding a way to express that will be deeply fulfilling and self-actualizing.” ❤️
Mac's goal to show up as authentically himself reminded me of another artist, Jacob Collier, who expressed a similar sentiment: "My job isn't to know who I am. My job is to make space for who I am". I love this idea that self-actualization is not a finite state: "I have learned who I am will show up that way with 100% authenticity" but, instead, about creating and holding space for oneself to grow into. I feel like the discipline you choose to create in (music, writing, painting, etc) is what holds that space. The practice of showing up is how you grow into yourself through the creative act.
Oh nice! I'm going to his show at Bill Graham in May; should be a great time.
I'm starting to teach myself piano and I've returned to a half written play that I finally want to finish. Both are very different creative experiences but both challenge my perfectionist tendencies in aggravating but (hopefully) growth-inducing ways.
